1. Virginia Will Assign Demerit Points for NY Convictions

The Virginia DMV keeps track of out-of-state violations. If you plead guilty or are convicted of a moving violation in New York, the Virginia DMV will assign demerit points to your record just as if the ticket was issued in VA.

2. Additional Hidden Penalties in New York

In addition to the demerit points added to your home record, there are also the following financial considerations you must be aware of:

  • NY Driver Responsibility Assessments (DRA): The NY DMV will fine you at least $300 if you accumulate 6 or more NY points in an 18-month period. For example, speeding just 21 mph over the posted limit is a 6-point ticket in New York.
  • Insurance Premium Increases: Out-of-state convictions are routinely reported to insurance companies and can cause your rates to spike.
