Alaska Drivers: Effect of New York Traffic Ticket Convictions

By Seth M. Azria, Esq.

How Alaska DMV Handles New York Traffic Tickets

If you receive a traffic conviction in New York State, Alaska will be notified of the offense because both states belong to the Driver License Compact.

Once notified, the Alaska DMV may record the conviction and assess points against your Alaska driver's license according to the Alaska Point System .

Common offenses assessed points on an Alaska driving record include:

  • Reckless Driving: 10 points
  • Driving Under Suspension or Revocation: 10 points
  • Refusal to Provide a Breath Sample: 10 points
  • Speeding (10–19 mph over limit): 4 points

Insurance Premium Increases & NY DMV Assessments

Insurance Rate Increases: Most importantly, your auto insurance provider will almost certainly learn of your New York conviction when reviewing your updated Alaska driving record during policy renewal cycles. Moving violation convictions frequently lead to substantial annual premium surcharges or the loss of safe driver discounts.

NY DMV Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA): Regardless of your home state license, the New York DMV maintains a shadow administrative record for all out-of-state drivers. Accumulating 6 or more points in New York within an 18-month window triggers mandatory Driver Responsibility Assessment fees starting at $300 ($100/year for 3 years). Failure to pay will result in a suspension of your driving privileges in New York.

Thank you Seth Azria for getting my traffic ticket dismissed. It was an out of state ticket and I was worried about the consequences. Attorney Azria was very courteous and he allayed all my concerns. He promised me to try his best to reduce the number of points. However, he was able to get the ticket dismissed. Its a classic case of under promise and over deliver.

Would Recommend to Anyone

Seth Azria was recommended to me by a friend. I can't say enough about how well I was treated, his responsiveness, and how my case was handled. My first call to him was on 12/22/14 and we met the same day. My first and last date in court was 1/15/15. The outcome was better than I ever expected it could be and would recommend him to anyone.

Azria & Bruffett did a very professional and effective job of dealing with my (out of state) speeding ticket in upstate NY. I was going 75 in a 65 which means multiple points along with a hefty fine. Ralph Habib was able to reduce the magnitude of my ticket down to a no points, non-moving violation. The paralegal Monica coordinated all of the communications and made it a very easy process for me. Fees were reasonable and competitive with other firms I shopped around at. I would recommend them to anyone else facing ticket issues as well.

Fantastic firm! I was traveling 3 hours away when I got a ticket and Azria & Bruffett took care of everything! I only had to answer a few emails! They were in constant contact with me throughout the entire process and got my ticket reduced to no points. I give them the highest recommendation!
