Why Hire a Traffic Lawyer to Contest Your Speeding or Traffic Ticket?

Filling out "Section A - Plea of Guilty" and mailing your ticket to the court is a conviction and makes you subject to all the points and fines allowed by law.  Your insurance company may increase your rates or even drop coverage. The best policy, even if it is your first ticket, is to contest the charge to minimize the impact on your record.

For example, let's say your speeding ticket alleges that you drove 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.  If you plead guilty, the DMV will add 4 points to your driving record and the court will impose a fine $90-$300 and a surcharge of $85. A reduction to the no-point violation of Stopping, standing, or parking outside of business or residence district would mean a fine of $0-$150 and no surcharge.  A reduction to the no-point Equipment violation of, for example, a noisy muffler or broken light would mean a fine of between $0-$150 and a $55 surcharge.

For most people, the points are the primary concern and rightly so because you will be paying any increased insurance premiums long after you have forgotten about the fine. Moreover, the New York DMV will impose a Driver Responsibility Assessment on all NY drivers that accumulate 6 or more points in any 18 month period. For 6 points, the assessment is $100 per year for 3 years and for every point over 6, there is an additional charge of $25 per point.
