South Dakota Drivers: Effect of New York Traffic Ticket Convictions
by Seth Azria on 3/10/2023
If you receive a traffic conviction in New York State, South Dakota will be notified of the offense as both states are members of the Driver License Compact.
South Dakota uses a points system, which assigns certain point values to different driving offenses and traffic violations. Any driver who accrues 15 points in 12 consecutive months or 22 points in 24 consecutive months, is subject to suspension.
Points are assessed on out-of-state-convictions just as if the violations were committed in South Dakota.

Insurance Premium Increases are Still a Concern
Most importantly, it is likely your insurance company will learn of your New York conviction and may increase your premiums or drop coverage. It remains important to mitigate the charge as much as possible.
