Courts may impose fines, prison terms, or both.
The DMV and insurance companies punish traffic convictions separately.
The possible sanctions for speeding increase based on how fast a person was traveling over the posted speed limit.
- For 1-10 mph over the limit the fine is $45-$150
- For more than 10 but less than 30 mph over the limit the fine is $90-$300, up to 15 days imprisonment or both.
- For convictions based on a speed in excess of 30 mph over the speed limit the fine is $180-$600.
For a second conviction in 18 months the maximum fine increases by $150 and a 3rd conviction in 18 months the maximum fine increases by $375.
These court imposed sanctions are in addition to DMV points, Driver Responsibility Assessments, DMV mandatory suspension for 3 speeding ticket convictions in 18 months, and any adverse affect an insurance company may attach to a speeding conviction according to their own point system.
Consequences for speeding tickets add up fast.
